August 3, 2009 In an effort to expand Denver’s urban sustainability identity, Sisters of Color United for Education (SOCUE) in concert with it’s “Art In Motion” program, is working with local and national individuals and groups in the creation and execution of the “Soul’d Roots: Media Justice & Health Institute,” Pt.2 - a 3-day event, August 5-7 where invited educators and youth will engage in activities aimed at fostering solidarity and sustainability in Denver’s Black and Brown communities through multi-media workshops and panels focusing on health, food traditions and security, social networking, and arts activism. Public community events address social justice issues such as Information and schedule at www.Soul-dRoots.org and 303-446-8800.

Full-day community workshops are offered throughout West and Northeast Denver with topics such as; Food As Medicine, Music Production, Film Editing, Emceeing, Hip-Hop Dance/Movement, and Community Murals featuring local and national instructors such as Stic.man of dead prez, and Afya Ibomu, and local cultural workers including, Apostle, Moetavation, Jolt, and Larry Southhall. Additionally, each class participant will help in the development of an educational product such as a mixtape, a political zine, or a video, aimed at encouraging urban health and healing.

“Soul’d Roots” is funded in part by the American Legacy. The Institute will introduce holistic healing practices while highlighting and documenting how identity, pregnancy, cancer and other health disparities have been affected by society’s racial and cultural dynamics. Additionally, “by highlighting tobacco use and sexual violence as a health disparity, the Institute also aims to expand the conversation around healing,” states “Art in Motion” program manager, Adrienna Corrales.

SOCUE has been building, supporting and sustaining health and healing with hard-to-reach populations and communities for 20 years through their “Art in Motion” and Promotor@ programs in which community artists, organizers, and health advocates are encouraged to draw from their own cultural wisdom, innate strength and comprehensive training to teach families, neighbors and co-workers about health promotion, risk reduction and health care access around topics such as; human sexuality; STDs and HIV/AIDS; domestic violence; substance abuse; harm reduction; client advocacy; curanderismo and other culturally relevant practices.
