Welcome to the 2nd edition of the "Soul'd Roots Institute." As part of this 3-day intensive, invited artists, educators, elders and youth will engage in workshops, activities, and conversations based on race, class, and gender, aimed at fostering health, wellness, solidarity and green sustainability in Denver's urban communities through multi-media workshops and lectures focusing on media making and it's influence, tobacco use and abuse, food traditions and security, social networking, and arts activism.
We are appreciative of the support from American Legacy Foundation in the funding and programmatic assistance for this Institute. Additional, we are grateful for the independent collaborations, consultants, healers, and social justice workers who offered opportunities for community members to share in the conversations on justice from a myriad of perspectives.
The “Soul’d Roots: Media Justice * Health Institute” is the latest in a series of urban sustainability events organized in communities of color to explore the new green economy, we are grateful and encouraged by your support.

Organizers' Statements:
Our energies are a medium to creation, like soil. Our focus is to nurture the seeds which are grown in our own minds, bodies spirits and communities. We continue to work with local high school students to create awareness about health issues disproportionately affecting our communities as well as addressing strength based techniques to creating wellness through art and social justice. We are seeking health and know it must happen in our actions and through our artistic endeavors. Our intent is to create open spaces which support, knowledge, guidance, community, love, communication, and foster the skills of those who work to create solutions.

In this newest season of change we offer a deliberate and purposeful conversation on collaborative power building and sustainability in our Brown and Black communities with this project we call "Soul'd Roots." The title itself, an acknowledgement of our people's shared history with trauma and redemption. As we revisit and re-member the earth-lessons of our ancestors, we create new models for this generation of "artivists" and peacemakers. Building solidarity and greenery for our grandchildren creates our path to liberation, I believe that the work we create together will indeed produce the blossoms of revolution.
